Harvester head – the key role of the safety guard in the saw assembly

Anyone who has ever worked with a saw knows perfectly well about the potential dangers associated with its use. These extremely useful, but also dangerous tools require proper attention and strict safety rules. One of the key elements designed to protect the user against accidents is the chain ejection guard.

The guard is designed to reduce the risk of serious injury or even loss of life that may result from the chain being thrown during use. In the event of a chain break, this guard must be strong enough to absorb the energy of the broken chain, thereby reducing the impact force that could lead to further damage.

Why shouldn’t you modify the cover?

Changes to the design of the cover can significantly affect its effectiveness. It is therefore important to leave the cover in the condition in which it was designed and manufactured, as only then can it effectively protect the user. The cover, which meets the ISO 11837:2010 standard, has been tested and confirmed to protect against dangerous accidents.

Maintaining the cover is as important as having it present. It is therefore recommended:

  • Regularly check the condition of the cover for wear, damage or cracks – as a result of using the device, perforation, reduction of the cover thickness, peeling and detachment, as well as edge wear may occur
  • Replace the cover and mounting screws once a year or more often if excessive wear or damage is found.
  • Keep all stickers and plates on the cover legible to assist in proper identification and use.

What else is worth remembering?

Before starting work, always familiarize yourself with your surroundings and ensure that all machine controls operate properly. Working safely with a saw also requires following the safety rules applicable at a given workplace.

Safety when working with a saw depends on many factors, but a properly maintained and used safety guard is one of the key protective barriers against potential accidents. Do not underestimate its role and always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and applicable safety standards.
